Livestock Supermarket | Sedgemoor

A series of images looking at the modern changes of buying and selling livestock at Sedgemoor Livestock Auction Market. Located at junction 24 on the M5 this 2008 purpose built facility is the largest livestock market in the South West and has effectively replaced many of the smaller village and town marts across the area, from Penzance in Cornwall to Carmarthenshire in South Wales. Farmers come from afar to trade in the economies of scale, filling heavy haulage trucks with hundreds of lamb and cattle.

Like the old town marts, Sedgemoor still has the noise and hustle and bustle of deals plus the social draw for farmers; whom for many is their only chance to meet others in what can be a lonely industry. As well as the auctions there is general market, cafe, toilet and showers, and farm machinery stores making it much like a one stop service station for farmers.
